Born: February 29, 1932
Died: November 14, 2017
Memorial Service: Tuesday, November 21, 2017
3:00 pm
Michaels Funeral Home, 800 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg

Alice Lovella Forbes was a 55-year resident of Plum Grove Estates in Palatine, Illinois. She died at home on November 14, 2017 attended by her son.

Alice was born in Hilo, Hawaii on February 29, 1932, Leap Year’s Day, to David Merlyn Lougher Forbes, and Alice Josephine Lackrie Forbes. She grew up on the 36,000-acre Mauna Kea Ranch, located on the ocean-facing slope of the volcano, with one sister, Audrey Forbes Terry, and 10,000 head of cattle. Alice graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas, and spoke with fond remembrance of her former teacher, Hattie Lee Hornbeck. While working as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, she met her husband-to-be, Alex Mark Erganian of St. Louis, Missouri, a business executive, who had been a pilot for Pan American Airlines, and a Captain in the USAF during WWII. They married in 1955, and built a house together in 1962, where they raised their family; a son, Mark, a daughter, Leslie, and their beloved Scottie, Angus.

Flight played an important role throughout her life, and Alice became a licensed pilot in her mid forties. She was a gifted oil painter, and expressed herself creatively in anything she put her hands and mind to, particularly in her yard, where nature was her canvas. Working with wood in any form from tree to polished bowl brought her much joy and fulfillment, a trait deriving from previous generations, that she passed to on to her descendants. She was a dedicated walker at Woodfield Mall, and a long-time member of the Chicago Botanic Garden.

She is survived by her son, Mark David Erganian, daughter Leslie Jeanne Erganian and her fiancé, Wolfgang Wagener, and cousin Mary Lou Jeffries. She was predeceased by her husband in 1998. Her passing is remembered with the spirit of aloha.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Alice’s name to the Chicago Botanic Gardens click “Support” and then click “Donate”.
