JOHN L. REID

John L. Reid

JOHN L. REID
Born:   April 24, 1954
Died:   June 14, 2015
Services: See details below

John L. Reid, age 61, of Republic, Missouri, passed away on June 14, 2015, at the Alexian Brothers Hospice Residence in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. He was surrounded by his family. John was born on April 24, 1954, in Liberal, Kansas, to Johnny O’Dell and Octava Marie (Tittle) Reid. On January 2, 1975, he was married to his high school sweetheart, Susan Riddle at the First Baptist Church in Cassville. John and Susan were blessed with three children: John Wesley, Sarah, and Bryan.

John grew up in Kansas, Indiana, Texas, and Missouri. His family ultimately settled in Cassville. John graduated from Cassville High School in 1972, where he played football for the Wildcats and was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. He attended Southwest Missouri State University, University of Missouri, and the University of Texas. As a child, John would listen to Texas Longhorn football games on the radio and dream of one day attending school there. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1979. John and Susan moved to Mesquite, Texas, when he took a job at Texas Instruments in Dallas. In Mesquite, he taught Sunday School at the United Methodist Church. In the early 90s, John had the opportunity to take his family across the ocean to live in England. During their time in England, John was able to share his love of history and travel with Susan and the children as they visited castles and gardens, museums and musicals, and made trips to Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, Amsterdam and Italy. John traveled the world during the 1980s and 90s, always bringing some souvenir back for the children, ranging from Australian boomerangs to Japanese happi coats.

Work brought John and the family back to the States, where they lived near Chicago for almost ten years. This began his love of the city of Chicago, its sports teams, and Italian beef sandwiches. During these years, his children were in high school and he got to enjoy watching them play football, softball, baseball, wrestling, and attending their plays and musicals.

In recent years, John took a position with Jack Henry Associates in Monett. He and Susan moved back to Missouri and lived in Republic. They watched as their oldest son, John Wesley, married his high school sweetheart, Sharon. All of John’s children obtained Master’s degrees from their respective schools, of which he took great joy in seeing. He loved to take in an Illini football game with John Wesley, or Illinois State Redbirds games with Sarah and Bryan — then more Longhorn games with Sarah. He took the utmost pride in recent years, however, in his two grandchildren, John Ezra and Norah, who were born to John Wesley and Sharon. They always loved every moment they spent with “Grandpapa.”

John and Susan enjoyed to travel, take in shows in Springfield and Branson, and spend time with all of their family living in southwest Missouri and Kansas City. Earlier this year, they celebrated their 40th anniversary surrounded by family. He taught his children the importance of being charitable and kind, as well as being hardworking and hungry for knowledge.

John is survived by his wife, Susan; his son John Wesley and daughter-in-law, Sharon of Lake Forest, Illinois; daughter Sarah of Republic, Missouri; son Bryan of Republic, Missouri; two grandchildren, John Ezra and Norah Reid; his mother Marie Reid of Cassville; two sisters, Jan Smith of Shell Knob and Karen LaBombarda of Dripping Springs, Texas; one brother, Steve Reid of Cassville; his mother in law, Evelyn Dryer Riddle of Republic; one sister in law Teresa Walker and her husband Gregory of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and one brother in law Jim Riddle and his wife Joan of Cape Fair. John was preceded in death by his father, Johnny Reid.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Friday, June 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cassville, officiated by Pastor Randy Johnson of Calvary Baptist Church in Republic. Bagpipes will be performed by Beau Buffington. Family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19, at the White Funeral Home & Crematory, Cassville, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of John.
